Iona senior point guard Scott Machado has hired agent Dan Fegan as his agent for the NBA Draft.
One of the more undervalued assets in an NBA Draft is a talented senior prospect. They are looked at as too old, have less potential, and did not develop fast enough for NBA decision-makers. In Machado’s case he was looked at highly coming out of high school. He had a few options at the D1 level, but went with the loyal program in Iona.
Over the past two years Machado has been tracked pretty thoroughly on NDI with a full report earlier this year, a pre-season interview, and a history tracker as he blazed through the NCAA’s History Books with assists.
He may not have the “upside” or “potential” as an 18 or 19 year old prospect, but has experience. At the time of the NBA Draft Machado will be 22 years old.
Machado is a poised floor general that gets all of his teammates the ball in spots where they can score. He has accuracy and vision that is matched by maybe one point guard in this class. Physically he is not 6-5 or an elite athlete that can run down a Gazelle. Machado is a throwback point guard that plays the position to get his teammates easy baskets.
On offense he will need to work on his shooting to get a consistent stroke. Without that teams can sag off of Machado taking away his passing lanes. His shooting has improved this year, but is just not consistent enough to be a reliable weapon. This year Machado made the same amount of threes as he did as a junior (40), but shot 26 less showing a better decision quality in finding his own shot. In a small sample Machado is a 40.4% three-point shooter, but 34.2% overall for his career.
As of today Machado is the No. 5 point guard, the No. 25 prospect on the Big Board, and going in the early 2nd Round of the Mock Draft.

The best point guard in the Nation is in Iona, New York. Machado has all the tools needed to be an elite point guard. He has great floor vision knowing exactly where his teammates are on the court at all times and where they want the ball. His first step and quickness allow Machado to flourish in a running style as well as get around the initial level of the defense. From the point guard position Machado is a very good rebounder and defender with terrific instincts.
Calling Machado a “late bloomer” is not entirely correct. He has been a consistent defender and scorer his entire career. Over the last two seasons however the game seems to have slowed down for him and he has firm control over his offense. Over those two seasons Machado played with Michael Glover and (this season) Lamont Jones, both are the best teammates he has had since high school. This season everything has come together for a career year.
Machado may be the most underrated or undervalued prospects this season. He is the best pure point guard in college and does everything on the court. Over the course of four years he has built a resume that speaks for itself. Most teams that need a point guard are in the lottery and there for a reason, at best Machado is going in the early second round.
