Every Tuesday leading up to the NBA Draft I am going to look at two prospects that do not get a lot of Nation acclaim. Today I am reviewing Drew Gordon and Kevin Jones.
By the time a prospect gets to the spring between junior and senior year there is little damage they can do to their stock. At that point they are already being called “old for the class” and “little potential” prospects.
As a junior Tyler Zeller (No. 14 Overall) had a solid season that would have landed him in the late first round by all accounts. He and teammates John Henson and Harrison Barnes came to the decision to come back to North Carolina for another run together.
Over the course of the season some players meet expectations while others need more time to develop. Some choose the course of learning on the job in the NBA, which makes financial sense, but over time proves to hurt their development.
After a Final Four run Virginia Commonwealth (VCU) received some acclaim as being a good, scrappy team that came together at the right time behind head coach Shaka Smart. That run was a great team effort, an effort led by then junior Bradford Burgess.
A standout freshman season put Jeremy Lamb on the NBA radar as a potential lottery talent. As a freshman Lamb scored in double figures every game during a tough Big East Tournament and throughout the NCAA Tournament on his way to becoming a key member of the National Champions.
With four years under his belt at Ohio State as a fixture at shooting guard William Buford is as experienced, and polished as any player in this draft class. Buford has seen it all from B.J. Mullins and Evan Turner to Aaron Craft and Jared Sullinger in his time with the Buckeyes.
Being the son of a former NBA All-Star makes it hard to create an individual identity, but Tim Hardaway Jr. is attempting just that at Michigan. The sophomore wing has a different look than his aforementioned father, and a very different game.
This is the perfect example of what “sample size” really means. All season the best player on the Syracuse Orange has come off the bench and played an efficiently, elite season statistically.
